The Rainbow fish rollercoaster
Rainbow Fish has always been admired for his special shiny scales, but he’s been having trouble making actual friends. When he consults a wise octopus for advice, the octopus advises Rainbow Fish to give away his scales to the other creatures of the sea. To aid Rainbow Fish in his quest, the octopus has called upon you to ride the ocean’s current alongside Rainbow Fish and hand out scales to all of the fish that you see. Are you ready to help Rainbow Fish make new friends?
For this particular piece of concept art, I was asked to take a beloved children’s IP and turn it into a ride vehicle for a potential attraction at a family-oriented theme park. I have always loved the vibrant colors of The Rainbow Fish and I always found the Rainbow Fish’s desire to make friends admirable. Therefore, I decided to adapt the original story into the format of a family coaster. The ride itself would feature animated figures of the other characters seen in the classic picture book and any set pieces will be painted in the iconic watercolor style of the original illustrations. As for the ride vehicle, it only made sense to model it after Rainbow Fish himself because the ride follows his journey. To create the ride vehicle, I pulled a pre-existing rollercoaster car from Sketchup’s 3D Warehouse and re-modeled some of the car’s original components to align more closely with my vision. I then saved different views of the model as JPEG files and brought them over to Adobe Photoshop to sketch over them.
